Polygonum cuspidatum is an herbaceous plant native to Asia, used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine, as in China it has been conferred several beneficial properties.
In Western herbal medicine, instead, this plant is appreciated and used for its antioxidant properties.
Often it is also indicated with the name of “false bamboo” because of its long hollow stems, which make it quite similar to the original plant.
Polygonum is also characterised by being an excellent source of resveratrol: the dry extract of the plant root indeed contains an amount of such substance that is 400 times higher than in grapes.
It can therefore easily be stated that “Japanese Knotweed” (another way this plant is commonly called) is undoubtedly the main natural source of resveratrol and, moreover, is the one that contains the most biologically active form.
